In the mid-1970s Toshiba ran its own hi-fi brand, Aurex, and used it to explore a technology that has remained exotic to this day: the condenser cartridge. The SR-510C direct-drive turntable of 1975 embodies that idea, integrating its own phono preamplifier for electret condenser systems – a feature that sets it apart from virtually every deck of its era.
The SR-510C works either with conventional MM cartridges or with condenser pickups; the built-in preamplifier was developed exclusively for Toshiba's own 401-C system and only operates together with the included SZ-1000 condenser equalizer and a matching cartridge (such as the Toshiba C401 – not included). Mounted is the Aurex C 550-M moving-magnet cartridge, the brand's top model and a sought-after rarity in its own right. A second Aurex headshell with SME mount is supplied, so a condenser system can be fitted at any time.
The example offered here has been elaborately overhauled and cosmetically refined: the top plate was newly made on an aluminium carrier complete with fresh engraving, and depending on the light the surfaces play with matt and gloss effects that merge into one another. A great many technician hours went into this restoration – a one-off that is unlikely to exist a second time in this combination and state of preservation.
The delivery comprises the SR-510C turntable, the SZ-1000 condenser equalizer with its manual, the Aurex C 550-M in its original Aurex headshell, a further Aurex headshell without cartridge, a power cable and two VBSC-2 phono cables. For collectors of classic hi-fi and devotees of fine phono engineering, an opportunity that rarely comes along.
