Open industrial design instead of a classic plinth: the SPIDER LC-2 KP 990 is a one-off, created as a project collaboration between Laga Concept and HEM Audio. Its foundation is the proven Kenwood KP/KD 990 direct-drive turntable with its highly precise PLL quartz control; every further component is an elaborate custom fabrication, and the electronics are either fully overhauled or factory-new. The Kenwood's automatic mechanism has been deliberately decommissioned — like many high-end decks, the SPIDER is designed for purely manual operation.
Two purpose-built tonearms are fitted: a 12-inch carbon arm with brass counterweights and a 9.5-inch arm on a Micro Seiki base, both mounted on specially made armboards and easy to remove for transport. The wiring uses 5-pin DIN connectors at the arm and WBT or Furutech RCA plugs towards the amplifier, each via 100 cm Sommer cables. The carbon arm carries the Audio-Technica AT 20SLa, the top MM cartridge of its series; the second arm holds the Ortofon X3 MC — both in good to very good condition.
The integrated Musical Fidelity LX 2 LPS phono preamplifier handles MM and MC cartridges alike and can also be used independently — deck, tonearms and phono stage effectively add up to three devices in one. Power comes from an external 240-volt supply bearing the Spider logo; a large, newly made acrylic dust cover with an inset logo completes the picture.
The scope of delivery includes the external power supply, both cartridges, the acrylic cover, a mains cable and two Sommer audio cables for the tonearms; the rear foot even provides a resting place for a single-record adapter puck.
