HD 550

Built in the USA between 1978 and 1980, the HD 550 High Definition Speaker System remains one of the Marantz classics sought after by collectors and music enthusiasts alike. The 3-way bass reflex design works at 8 ohms with 88 dB sensitivity and covers a frequency range from 35 to 20,000 Hz.

The speakers underwent a full technical overhaul around two years ago: the bass drivers received new surrounds, and the potentiometers for midrange and treble – a critical point, since signal paths run through them – were serviced and work flawlessly. The unusually large dome tweeters, a rare sight, were also treated with fresh ferrofluid. In our final check, both systems performed faultlessly, just as the manufacturer intended.

Sonically, the HD 550 convince with vivid reproduction of voices and instruments and dry, controlled bass. Ideal partners are hi-fi systems and stereo receivers from the same era.

The cabinets show age-appropriate traces of use, retouched cleanly and discreetly in places; the grilles are flawless. The pair comes from its first owner and a non-smoking household and is supplied without further accessories or speaker stands – secure transport packaging is guaranteed.
