Fully discrete circuitry with no standard ICs in the signal path – the early amplifiers from Australia's Burson Audio followed an uncompromising design philosophy. This pairing of PRE-160 preamplifier and PP-160 power amplifier comes from exactly that generation; it rarely appears on the market today and remains something of an insider's tip among audiophiles.
Massive power supplies, extremely short signal paths and a Class-A-oriented topology voiced for musicality define both units. The PRE-160 handles volume through a high-quality stepped attenuator and combines excellent channel matching with a very low noise floor. The PP-160 delivers around 2x 100 watts into 8 ohms, 2x 180 watts into 4 ohms and peaks of 2x 300 watts into 2 ohms; it is considered remarkably load-stable and sounds more powerful with demanding loudspeakers than the raw figures suggest.
Sonically, the combination stands for a natural, organic presentation: holographic imaging, full-bodied mids, deep and well-controlled bass, and silky highs that stay fatigue-free over long sessions – a slightly warm, almost tube-like character paired with confident control. Voices and acoustic instruments in particular benefit from its fluid, relaxed way with music.
Both units come from a high-end studio where they were used only occasionally for demonstrations; there was no private previous owner. Our audio technicians have inspected the pair, and no visible damage is present. The original boxes and both manuals are included.
