Scorpio

Musicality has always come first at Denmark's Gryphon Audio, and the Scorpio carries that signature into the digital domain: reviewers have praised this luxury-class CD player for its lively, rhythmically engaging presentation – a source that makes music rather than dissecting it. The manufacturer's list price started at 8,000 euros.

Inside works a purpose-built, vibration-damped transport of European manufacture, its aluminium drawer running on stainless-steel guides. Conversion is handled asynchronously at 32 bit/192 kHz, while three toroidal transformers and precise clocking keep jitter to a minimum. The sandblasted, anodised aluminium chassis underlines the ambition; outputs comprise a balanced XLR pair and a digital output (BNC, or RCA via the included adapter).

The unit on offer carries software upgrade 1.1 and has been technically serviced: the transport was overhauled, the drawer rubbers replaced with original parts, and the remote control cleaned and fitted with fresh batteries. It comes from its first owner in flawless condition, complete with original packaging, serial number, original remote, brochure and manual; it is the 240-volt version and includes the BNC/RCA adapter.
