Fully optioned, the Nēo 380D becomes far more than a D/A converter: with the MiND streaming module and the electronic M-eVol volume control on board, this reference DAC from Canadian high-end manufacturer Simaudio can serve as the complete digital command centre of a system, driving a power amplifier directly. That is exactly how our unit is configured – with the maximum equipment the manufacturer offered for this model.
Sonically, the 380D ranks among the outstanding converters of its class. It plays with precision, fine dynamics and remarkable spatial depth; voices appear tangible, instruments remain cleanly separated. Even against current designs from considerably higher price brackets, this 32-bit converter holds its own.
Connectivity leaves little to be desired: digital inputs via USB, AES/EBU, BNC, coaxial and optical, plus balanced XLR and RCA outputs. The scope of delivery includes the original remote control, power cord, antenna, owner's manual and the original serial-number and equipment list. The unit is the original 240-volt version and comes with a 12-month warranty.
Our unit comes from a well-kept non-smoking household and was operated exclusively in a hi-fi rack. Technically it works without restriction; we tested it both as a DAC and as a preamplifier. The front panel is free of scratches; only the top cover shows minor traces of use depending on the light. The overall impression is excellent, as our original photos show.
